Why Is My Smoke Alarm Beeping? Beep Diagnoser
Pick what your alarm is doing and get the likely cause. Most beeps are a low battery or an alarm past its 10-year life; I diagnose and fix them for a flat $99.99 service fee plus the alarm, across the Lower Mainland.
Pick a pattern above to see the likely cause. With JavaScript off, every pattern is listed below.
Every beep pattern, explained
One short chirp every 30 to 60 seconds
Most often a low battery or an alarm at the end of its 10-year life. Check the manufacture date on the back. Under 10 years: replace the battery (or on a sealed unit, it is done). Over 10 years: replace the alarm.
It keeps chirping after I changed the battery
Common causes are a battery not seated fully, leftover charge in a hardwired unit, or an alarm that has expired. Hold the test button for 15 seconds to reset it. If it chirps again, or the date on the back is over 10 years old, the alarm needs replacing.
A sealed 10-year alarm is chirping
Sealed alarms have no battery to change. A chirp means the unit has reached end of life or has a fault, so the whole alarm gets replaced. The date on the back confirms it.
It only chirps at night or in the early morning
A weak battery shows up when the house cools overnight, so the chirp seems to come and go. Treat it as a low battery or an old alarm and check the date.
Every alarm in the house is chirping or sounding
On an interconnected system, one alarm in trouble sets off the rest. Look for the one with a different flashing light, usually the oldest. If several are over 10 years old, replacing the loop together is cleaner.
It goes off while cooking or after a shower, with no smoke
Steam, cooking fumes and dust can trigger an alarm that sits too close to a kitchen or bathroom. Clean it with a vacuum, and if it keeps happening the location or the alarm type needs to change.
The full alarm is sounding right now
Treat it as real. If you see or smell smoke, or your CO alarm is sounding, get everyone outside and call 911. Once you are sure it is safe, I can find out why it went off.
Not sure, or want it done?
Check the manufacture date on the back first: 10 years from that date is the limit for every smoke alarm. If it is beeping and you would rather not climb a ladder, I will diagnose it on the spot, replace what needs replacing and test every alarm in the home. Flat $99.99 service fee, 10am to 8pm, seven days a week, evenings and weekends at no extra charge. See beeping smoke alarm fix and how long smoke alarms last.
